I Smell Something Rotten

When it comes to the disaster in Lahaina

Could they have blasted it faster in China?

Let’s ask a few short, simple questions, shall we?

Why did they torch one little section of Maui?

How convenient the elite didn’t seem to be touched

Only those who wouldn’t agree to sell were crushed

Why was a full-fledged investigation not mounted?

Why were all the hazard sirens not sounded?

Why did Green grant himself emergency powers

A couple of weeks before the town was devoured?

Why was the water in the region’s mains shut off?

Why were those trying to escape the flames cut off?

People seemed to be caught in a true death trap

Everything but a certain hue of blue was zapped

Where did the children go? Were they kidnapped?

Why is it so hard to get ahold of the facts?

Seems like everyone in the know just stands there stallin’

What about the powers behind Alexander and Baldwin?

Like Van Guard and Black Rock and a host of others

What about the children, the fathers and mothers?

It ain’t all that hard to keep them settled and sheltered

Why were the cars charred and the metals all melted?

Except the blue umbrellas – they were untouched

And a couple blue cars weren’t burned that much

Is this the new pattern for those who stand in their way?

The cost to life doesn’t matter, who care ‘bout fair play?

Was it a direct energy weapon or a laser from space?

A message from heaven or maybe the airforce base?

I think it’s time we get down to the real nitty gritty

This was prime land to build a fifteen minute city

The governor had announced he would be the first

A couple of weeks right before this “hell on earth”

I’m sure it’s all just in our minds

But he who seeks will surely find

But we need to seek with all our hearts

And keep in mind, it only takes a spark

To get a wildfire going

What really transpired

Is there no way of knowing?

Did big developers conspire?

Our suspicions are growing

How quickly we seem to have forgotton

What God did to Gomorrah and Sodom

I’m thinking we’ve hit rock bottom

I believe I smell something rotten

This tragedy has been hard to swallow

But it’s happening and it’s hard to follow

I’m not sure but it seems quite likely

The right pockets got lined quite nicely

But at the end of the day what seems to really matter

Is what happens to the dreams that’ve been shattered?

What’s happening to the un-housed and displaced?

This tragedy is a lousy disgrace…

I’m sure it’s all just in our minds

But he who seeks will surely find

But we need to seek with all our hearts

And keep in mind, it only takes a spark

I smell something rotten in Denmark…
